QFX format does not have the category. If you need to import the category, use QIF format.

CSV2QIF at http://www.propersoft.net/CSV2QIF creates importable QIF files for all account types and all Quicken version.

That is strange.

the pdf manual online says category is a fields that can be mapped.

Also, why does the software program show 'category' on the import screen but I am unable to assign a field to it?

Is there any reason why category is not available?

http://www.propersoft.net/CSV2QFX/

Propersoft shows category as one of the populated fields on this web page. Just scroll down to see the example.

It makes no sense that I am unable to map category

Category is a field in Quicken 2013 that has been populated for all my past transactions. Why would I not be able to populate this field when I import transactions?

What you see on Quicken screenshot is the category assigned by Quicken during import based on recognized payee and renaming rules.

QFX format specification does not have the category specified.

If you need to import the category, use CSV2QIF.

Thanks. Do you know whether I am able to import qif into a Quicken 2013 credit card account and if so how this would work?

Under qif import, Quicken 2013 only provides options to import into property and asset accounts, not savings and credit card acccts.

Yes, you can import "right" qif files for all account types into Quicken 2013. I do all testing in Quicken 2013.

Ignore that message on the qif import screen and follow the instructions on http://www.propersoft.net/CSV2QIF (scroll down)

two Important moments:

- in CSV2QIF enter the account NAME exactly as you have in Quicken and select the account type

- in Quicken, on the qif import screen select <all accounts> from the account dropdown list
